Have you always wanted to have a beautiful backyard, but lacked the time to do so? Are you looking for a way to create a luscious backyard oasis that requires very little upkeep? If so, then you need to learn all that you can about designing a low-maintenance backyard.
Doing so can help you get the gorgeous aesthetic that you’ve always dreamt of, but without having to dedicate your entire week to keep it clean. Nobody has time for that!
See below for an in-depth guide listing several tips on how to design a low-maintenance backyard that will blow your socks off.
1. K.I.S.S.
The term “dream backyard” is relative. Ask ten different people what they’re dream backyard would include, and you might get ten different answers.
Everyone looks to install awesome features such as fire pits, gardens, pools, hot tubs, outdoor kitchens, swim-up bars, playgrounds, and so forth. But here is the harsh reality: you can’t have it all.
Far too many people sabotage their own backyard by adding too many features on it. Not only does this cause your yard’s aesthetic to look overcrowded, it also drastically increases the amount of maintenance you’ll be putting into it. As great as pools are, they come with a laundry list of responsibilities to keep them in great shape.
For that reason, we recommend that you remember “KISS”, it stands for “Keep It Simple, Silly”. Pick one or two key features that your backyard will contain, then use them as the centerpiece in your yard’s layout.
For example, you might choose an outdoor kitchen and fire pit combination to enjoy year round. You can install a beautiful tile or brick flooring around both and provide a stark contrast between those areas and the luscious green grass that makes up the rest of your yard.
2. Hire Professional Services Where You Can
You want to have your cake and eat it, too. We get it! Believe it or not, there is a way that you can install your dream backyard, keep up with the maintenance, and still have ample time to enjoy it with your family: hire professional services where you can.
You could pour your heart and soul into maintaining that beautiful green grass, but is it really worth the time and effort to do that? This can be especially difficult in places like Central Florida (due to the weeds). Hire these services instead.
Remember when we said that pools require a lot of upkeep? You can invest in pool care services to do the dirty work for you and have it ready to dive into whenever you and your family wish!
Here’s our suggestion: grab a pen and notepad and list out all of the tasks that your backyard currently requires. Circle all of the tasks that you don’t enjoy doing, and then find a professional service that can help you take care of them.
By avoiding these monotonous tasks, you’ll clear up your schedule and have your backyard in tip-top shape for whenever you get to relax and enjoy it.
3. Contain the Wilderness
While it might be wierd to think about, your backyard is technically a piece of the wilderness. This is especially true for those of you that live near woods or forests.
There’s a common misconception that, to have a beautiful backyard, you need to tame the wilderness and prevent any plantation from popping up out of place. That couldn’t be further from the truth.
Structured backyards are all about having definitive lines. For example, nothing’s more satisfying than seeing a crisp line between the mulch and grass in your yard. It gives off a feeling of organization and control.
So here’s our suggestion: instead of trying to prevent plants from growing in that one area of your yard, why not let it rage between a controlled space? Letting some areas grow wild (within reason) will give your backyard a connection with nature that most backyards don’t have.
4. Shrubs Over Seasonal Flowers
Look, are we saying that you can’t have any seasonal flowers on your yard? Of course not. That said, planting a bunch of seasonal flowers and plants on your property can be a form of self-sabotage. They require a lot of work.
Shrubbery, on the other hand, requires very little work and still offers you variation. You could plant shrubs in your flower beds and have a look that stays crisp and beautiful year-round.
All of the different shades of green will offer a sense of uniformity. Since green is the color of wellness, you’ll also find it to be more theraputic than a flower bed filled with multiple, loud colors.
5. Install a Sprinkler System
Did you know that grass needs around 1.5 inches of water per week to keep its luscious and full look? Depending on the season, your grass might go several weeks without receiving that amount.
As a result, you’ll be the one responsible for “making it rain” by watering your grass. That will compensate for the lack of rain and ensure consistent growth.
By installing a sprinkler system, you remove the need to sit there with a hose. Some irrigation systems are so smart these days, they’ll detect when to turn on automatically.
According to Fortune Business Insights The ceramic tiles market size was USD 50.84 billion in 2020 and will rise at a USD 77.82 between 2021 to 2028
