According to scientists, the human nose can detect at least one trillion scents. With most of our day being spent in our homes, it is important that you surround yourself with smells that keep you feeling good.

One increasingly popular way to combat the smells of everyday life is by using reed diffusers. Reed diffusers are simple to use and look beautiful in any room.

In our guide, we lay out how reed diffusers work and the benefits of having one within your home.

How Reed Diffusers Works

Unlike other air fresheners, reed diffusers don’t use heat or electricity to produce fragrance. Instead, the reeds soak up the fragrance oil in the bottle and release the scent into the air naturally.

Because of their simplicity, it is easy for anyone to make their own reed diffuser at home. To make a DIY reed diffuser, all you need is a small jar or bottle, a set of reeds or sticks, and any reed diffuser oil blend you like.

Add a few drops of essential oil to a base mineral oil like safflower oil to make a blend. Add 5 to 8 reeds to the jar and oil. The different directions the reeds face will spread the scent around your room.

When setting up your fragrance diffuser, allow the reeds around 30 minutes to soak in the oil. If you are using the reed diffuser in a larger room, you can add more reeds for a stronger smell.

The Pros and Cons

Compared to other fragrance options, there are many positives to owning a reed diffuser.

The biggest benefit of a reed diffuser is the low maintenance. Because you don’t have to worry about an open flame or melting wax, you can leave the diffuser without worry.

Another benefit is that reed diffusers last longer than other air fresheners and are more environmentally friendly. The diffuser is reusable and doesn’t require batteries which reduces waste while still putting off a smell for 2 to 4 months.

Though there are a lot of benefits, there are a few downsides as well.

Reed diffusers are small and are only able to fill one room at a time. Though some may consider this a positive, it can be annoying to need a new diffuser for every room.

Reed diffusers also can’t be turned off or not used the way other air fresheners can be. This means that you will be using up your oil even when you aren’t home.

Other Options

If a reed diffuser doesn’t work for you, there are a few other fragrance options that have many of the same benefits.

One of these options is the Aromatech Air Stream Single (HVAC). This fragrance diffuser works covers 1,000 to 7,000 square feet and works best for scenting larger areas than a reed diffuser can.

Another option is an electric diffuser. These diffusers give you a little more control while still providing the benefits of aromatherapy oils.

Before purchasing a new reed diffuser, consider exactly what you are looking for in an air freshener. Your choice of air freshener should be able to meet all of your specific needs.
