Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that’s used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease. It works by reducing the amount of acid in your stomach. That way, there will be less acid backing up into your esophagus, which will help relieve heartburn symptoms.

Not only that, but it can also heal erosions to the stomach and esophagus and prevent them from coming back. 

Currently, it’s approved for use in adults and children over the age of 12 and is available in two different strengths—30mg and 60mg (the FDA has approved a Dexilant generic but it’s not yet available in pharmacies).

Dexilant Medication: Dosing Information

The Dexilant dosage for GERD is one 30mg capsule once daily; it should be taken for a total of 4 weeks. For those with erosive esophagitis, the recommended dosage is one 60mg capsule daily for up to 8 weeks.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible; the only exception is if it’s close to the time when you’re supposed to take your next dose. You never want to take two capsules at once as it can increase your risk of side effects.

Dexilant Side Effects: What to Expect 

Dexilant is generally well tolerated. With that said, some people may experience side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, and abdominal pain.

Children between the ages of 12 and 17 may also experience mouth pain, throat pain, and the common cold.

Fortunately, most of these side effects will go away within a couple of days.

Call your doctor right away if you develop a fever, persistent diarrhea, severe stomach cramping, or blood/mucus in your stool—it may indicate a severe intestinal condition.

Also, seek medical attention immediately if you notice any symptoms of a severe allergic reaction such as itching of the face, swelling of the throat, trouble breathing, and severe dizziness.
